Grading Foundations

Pattern grading creates a controlled family of sizes from an approved base pattern without changing the intended fit balance or design proportion.

  • Establish the base size and target body-size system
  • Define X and Y grade increments at every cardinal point
  • Use nested pattern checks to detect irregular movement
  • Grade seam lines and cut lines consistently
  • Preserve notches, drill marks, grain lines, and match points
  • Validate every size rather than checking only extremes

Grade Rule Engineering

Each point moves according to the measurement chart, garment ease, style geometry, and product category.

  • Bust/chest growth is distributed across front, back, and side seams
  • Length grades may differ from girth grades
  • Armhole and sleeve-cap grades must remain compatible
  • Collar stand, neckline, and collar grades must sew together
  • Pocket and trim positions require proportional or fixed rules
  • Large size ranges may require multiple grade-rule segments

Manual and CAD Workflow

CAD grading improves repeatability but still depends on technically correct grade rules and disciplined verification.

  • Lock the approved base pattern before grading
  • Name points and rules using a controlled convention
  • Run walk, seam-length, notch, and overlap checks
  • Check nested outlines for jumps and reversals
  • Export with scale and unit verification
  • Archive version, operator, date, and approval status

Standards and Tolerances

Grade increments must reconcile with the finished measurement chart and buyer method of measurement.

  • Compare calculated pattern grade with finished garment grade
  • Include shrinkage and sewing take-up in pattern dimensions
  • Set tighter control on neck, armhole, rise, and functional openings
  • Use ISO 8559 concepts where body measurement definitions apply
  • Document buyer-specific measurement methods
  • Approve a full size set for high-risk silhouettes

Troubleshooting

Most grading failures originate in incorrect point distribution, incompatible mating seams, or unverified specification changes.

  • Twisted sleeve: review cap and armhole distribution
  • Neck opening mismatch: walk collar and neckline seams
  • Unbalanced side seam: compare front/back growth
  • Pocket drift: define anchor-based positioning
  • Extreme-size distortion: introduce segmented rules
  • Spec mismatch: reconcile measurement chart and pattern audit
