Tolerance Principles

A tolerance is the permitted deviation from the specified finished measurement, not a target for production variation.

  • The specification remains the production target
  • Set tolerances by measurement criticality and product function
  • Use tighter limits for openings, mating parts, and safety dimensions
  • Account for fabric stretch, shrinkage, thickness, and garment size
  • Buyer tolerances always override generic guidance
  • Do not offset one out-of-tolerance point with another point

Method of Measurement

Repeatable measurement depends on a precise garment presentation and point-to-point method.

  • Condition and relax garments before measurement where required
  • Use a flat, level measurement table and calibrated flexible tape
  • Fasten closures and align edges according to buyer method
  • Measure without stretching unless the method specifies extension
  • Define half, full, straight, curved, and along-seam measurements
  • Record actual values and signed deviation, not pass/fail alone

Typical Control Bands

Common working bands must be confirmed against the approved buyer specification.

  • Small openings and placements often use ±0.3–0.5 cm
  • Chest, waist, and hip may use ±1.0–2.0 cm by category and size
  • Body and sleeve lengths commonly use ±1.0–1.5 cm
  • Symmetry differences usually require tighter internal control
  • Stretch products need a defined relaxed and extended method
  • Critical protective dimensions require product-specific limits

Sampling and Trend Control

Measurement auditing should detect drift before a complete lot moves outside tolerance.

  • Approve pattern, shrinkage, size set, and first output before bulk
  • Measure all points on initial pieces, then use risk-based checkpoints
  • Plot high-risk points by hour, line, size, and operator
  • Escalate trends before values cross the tolerance boundary
  • Recheck after machine, folder, operator, bundle, or wash change
  • Keep measurement reports linked to pattern and spec revisions

Troubleshooting

Measurement failures often combine pattern, cutting, sewing, relaxation, and washing causes.

  • Consistent offset: verify pattern and seam allowance
  • Growing drift: check guides, operator handling, and machine feed
  • Size-only failure: audit grade rule and nested pattern
  • Post-wash failure: correct shrinkage allowance and wash process
  • Asymmetry: review ply alignment, notches, and differential feeding
  • High variation: standardize garment presentation and inspector method
